Using equivalent circuit to Zn414, Make Your own 3 volt Mini Pocket AM Reciever

(Forget all ZN414/YS414/MK414 or 415 etc etc…. Make your own ZN414 or Mk414 Equivalent Circuit)

Hello Friends, here is a Tested and trusted mini Pocket sized AM Receiver circuit diagram for you. It’s a suitable project for fun and Hobby. The most importantly it works great as I have made it for my own. It can be operated as low as 3volt DC using two AAA sized pencil batteries. It can receive Medium Wave frequency range from 500KHz to near about 1100KHz. As a hobbyist I tried to make such a mini AM receiver for last many years. Like all beginners I too started with simple Crystal Radio set. But from my experience for last many years and several trials, “Crystal Sets” will only works fine if you are near around couple of kilometers from your local radio stations and also there should not any high voltage electrical line passing nearby you. Other wise it’s a waste of time to trying to receive MW signals from a Crystal set. So next time before going to make a crystal set collecting schematics from different sites, Do give some attention to these points.

   I have gone through number of sites for a working schematic diagram but you know all are wasted until you got a ZN 414 or MK484 or TA7642 ICs which are nearly rare to most places and are quite expensive too. If you find one of them then I think you are lucky.

So I just got a schematic diagram which is equivalent to those AM receiver ics. This circuit contains 3 BC548 transistors, 3 Resistors and a capacitor and trust me it works fine.

The Front End Detector circuit equivalent to ZN414,YS414, MK484 or TA7642

Here, All 3 transistors are BC 548;
                        R1, R3 ----- 10KΩ;
                              R2 ------ 270KΩ;
                              C1 ------ 330PF (Coded as 331 ceramic type)

Following are the images of my Designed Circuit of the above schematic.

This circuit is Equivalent to all ZN414, MK484, YS414 or TA7642

Now come to the main Schematic,

Here is the schematic for head phone

                                                              Here is the schematic to drive a Loud Speaker

Here points A,B and C are the Points to Equivalent circuits mentioned above…….

Here is the circuit if you want to add the front end detector circuit on the same board.

Components List:

            Transistors
 Q4 ------BC337 or BC549;
                                 Q5------BC548;
            Resistors
R4 ---- 1 KΩ;
R5 ----             100 KΩ;
R6 ---- 680 KΩ;
R7 ---- 3.3 KΩ;
R8 ---- 220 KΩ;
R9 ---- 1.5 KΩ;
R10 --- 10 KΩ Volume Control;

            Capacitors
                                C2 ----  0.47 µf  (coded as 474, ceramic or polyester );
C3 ----  0.1 µf (coded as 104, ceramic or polyester);
C4 ----  0.1 µf (coded as 104, ceramic or polyester);
2J Variable Capacitor
C5 ---- 500 PF Variable Capacitor or 2J Gang Capacitor found in old    transistor radio;

C6 ---- 100µf electrolytic;

C7 ----  0.1 µf (coded as 104, ceramic or polyester);
C8 ----  0.1 µf (coded as 104, ceramic or polyester);
C9 ----  1 µf or 2.2µf or 4.7µmf electrolytic;
C10 ---  47µf electrolytic;
C11 ---  220µf electrolytic;

IC TDA 7231 is 8 pin DIP and can be operated at lowest 3Volt DC.
L1 ---- Medium Wave Antenna Coil. with Ferrite rod.
L1 can be made by yourself at home, take a ferrite rod of 1cm in diameter and 5 to 6 cm long , wind a coil about 80 to 90 turns  closely and tightly to each other with a 30 or 32 gauge enameled copper wire, fix the coil on the rod by a cello tape.
Home made MW Antenna Coil. This coil is on flat bar shaped ferrite rod of 5.5cm long and 1.2cm width and the thickness is 0.5cm.

Finished Board /All components on PCB including the front end detector circuit (the small one above the blue capacitor) mentioned earlier.
Complete Receiver set  in a plastic box

Points to be noted in making the receiver:

As I told you earlier it is a tested circuit diagram and will definitely work if you connect all components properly with correct values. I will prefer to fit the components on PCB rather than Vero board or testing board. A single loose connection may not work the kit properly so take extra attention during soldering.

The circuit may not work if any one of the semiconductor component i.e. the transistors, diodes or the IC is faulty. So test all these semiconductors before using. [In IC TDA7231, all 4 pins i.e. pin no’s 5 to 8 are already short circuited from the manufacturer, as they are for grounded so do not consider it as its fault. ]

For better performance, always maintain a distance between the MW antenna coil from the Loud speaker as the magnetic field of the magnet present in the loud speaker highly effects the receiving signals and make loud noise. Use magnetic field shielded Loud speakers.

Regarding to the use of Variable capacitor or Gang  capacitor,
You may find different sized from different old receivers. Generally you can find a small sized in old scrap pocket radios which are about 250PF to 450PF. Here you need 500PF or more which picture is shown above. But still if you can’t find the bigger one, you can use a smaller one. For the smaller one work, you have to attach an extra 100PF (coded as 101) or 220PF (coded as 221) or 330PF (coded as 331) capacitor parallel to the variable capacitor depending on the value of the variable capacitor to increase the value of the variable capacitor (this is an experimental work, that’s up to you).

Picture of different sized variable or gang capacitors

Here CX is the additional capacitor to increase the value of the variable capacitor C5 the total capacitance of the two capacitors is CX+C5

I hope these points will help  you in making the project and wish you luck .

Thanks..........

      Yes of course you can use bc547, bc549 instead bc548. I m using bc548 and is working great. I'll prefer to use a polyester capacitor at C2 and its value should not be lowered than .47mF...as it has a very important role in here.
      Thanks Again.

  3. can i use this Front End Detector circuit equivalent to ZN414,YS414, MK484 or TA7642 mentioned above in another am radio circuits as a ta7642 or zn414 ics ??
    and does this equivalent circuit have (AGC) an automatic gain control function exist in those ics ?? and big thanks for you ......great work

  4. Yas, You can but I think U may not satisfy with the audio I mean the volume level. Because the ZN/Mk/YS414 or ta7642 these all are come with inbuilt preamplifier so they can be operated with just a single or two transistors for external amplification...

    Thanks 😊

  6. i made the equivalent circuit but it doesn't work and i made 2 transistor (2sc1815y) connected to each other like in this page www.zea.jp/audio/schematic/sc_file/022.htm it works but the sound is so low specially in far stations what shall i do for raise sound of all stations ???

  7. and i found that 2n3904 is better than 2sc1815y in sound but still very very low sound cant hear

  8. Thanks for trying my design... the circuit u r. Trying from that page which u sent to me will be suitable for headphones only and U can make its volume lil bit louder on headphones by increasing the voltage supply that is try it with 3volt to 9volts... If u want to drive it on loud speakers then u will have to add an extra amplifier circuit as I used in my design using tda7231 IC in headphones ends.

    But still I will suggest u to try my design on a a pcb (as on veroboard or universal pcb may not work properly) with the equivalent transistors bc547/548/549 or your 2n3904.

    Thanks

  14. Sir is there are two types of Capacitors 1.electrolytic 2.ceramic or polyester Capacitors so we are confusing so please add Capacitor voltage specifically thank you sir

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yes of course ... Its clearly mentioned in the parts list inside Brackets that which are electrolytic and which are ceramic or polyesters type including their codes ... (Such as for .1mf value of a ceramic/polyester capacitors will b coded as 104) ... More over if u go through the schematic (the circuit diagram ) , the ceramic or polyester capacitors have no polarities as positive or negative... But the electrolytic capacitors are shown their positive polarity by + signs...

      U can use any low voltage capacitors here, whether it may be electrolytic or polyester or ceramic i.e. from 16volts to 25volts ..but u can use 50_volts to 63volts which are easily available in the markets.... I m preferring to select low voltage capacitors to reduce the size of the circuits ... Because as the the voltage of a capacitors increase their size also increase ...

      I hope u gt it ...but still if u r in confused then feel free to ask me about ur doubts again 😊

      Thanks.

    I would like to build your circuit for 5 volt power supply because:

    1. I can use LM386 audio amplifier IC

    2. I can use power supply as "power bank" (portable mobile phone charger/battery).

    3. I think there is no need of a 5k preset in a 5 volt circuit.

    But I do not know the circuit designing theory.

    If you don't mind please add the value of components for your transistor radio for 5 volt power supply

    Thank you very much

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Look... there is no need to modify any values of components for 5volt power supply ... as I have already tested it from 3volt to 9 volts power supply... and it runs well ...increasing the voltage increase its audio volume level a bit high ... but I will suggest u to not remove the 5k preset... because if u get (or u might get) some whistelling noise after using a power bank which may have a lil bit high current value, then you can adjust the necessary power supply to the main receiver unit via that 5k preset ...
      So good luck ...
      Thanks

  29. Excuse me for the stupid question. I don't understand the function of the two forward biased 1n4148 diodes. depending on current the potential at their end should be about 2V (for a 10 mA current so 1V on each) and they seem to take the power directly from the battery.
    What are they for ?

    ReplyDelete

    1. I think the position of R4 is not correct. R4 goes between c6(+) and r7 to limit the current through the diodes.

  32. For C2, I used Polyester type capacitor as its performance is better than ceramic type...but it will b ok if it's a ceramic type... It also work great.

    I think 474k 250v cap wil b very huge in size. But it will work. If can find suitable type Capacitor for C2 in old scrap circuit board of CRT monitor or TV .

    ReplyDelete
  33. Yes surely TA7642 will work great ... If u get that IC and if it is in good condition then your second problem will b solved.. That means u may can receive more than one station...
    Good luck.

  34. If the diodes are becoming so hot then definitely either they are faulty or u r not connected as shown on the diagram. Actually these two forward biased diodes D1& D2 (1N4148)appear to short the circuit but they are just dropping the voltage to near about 1.5 volt as the front end detector circuit required only that amount of voltage to operate...

    Thnks...

    ReplyDelete
  35. Oh ok ok... Sorry then...
    Yes ofcourse it will work but I thnik u will not be satisfied with the volume level then because as that circuit was for TA7642 which itself contained an inbuilt Preamplifire section so you will neef to add another 1.5volt in series to increase its driving voltage by 3Volt. And my design will receive all those MW stations which are comes under its frequency range which I have mentioned at the beginning. U can also try by modifying the variable capacitor (or increasing its value) to receive more stations which I have mentioned at the end ... Thanks

  36. I think the position of R4 is not correct. R4 goes between c6(+) and r7 to limit the current through the diodes.

  42. I have my own MK-484 Radio Receiver that uses regeneration(reaction), and a single audio xsistor, to drive a small mini-speaker of 150 Ohms directly - - no impedance matching capacitor or audio xformer, is needed!

    ReplyDelete
  43. I'm viewing this in 2020 and you're correct! D1 and D2 have a combined voltage drop of about 1.2V - if placed across the battery, as drawn, they will draw a current as high as the battery can deliver (that's why the diodes get hot). R4 must be placed between the battery and the diodes, to form a stable 1.2V supply to the RF section of the receiver.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Dear John, if U have MK484 radio receiver then you have no need to make this one... Plz read carefully the second paragraph of this post at the beginning. In MK484 ic have indbuilt pre amplifier section. Therefore you don't have to do enough for output audio.

  46. Sorry currently I don't have any information regarding to that but yes I can suggest an easy way... You can purchase a low wattage mono amplifier module which could be driven with 3 to 5 volt DC from any online store. Best thing is that you will get a readymade amplifier module designed with all components and it will have all necessary input , output, battery points marked on it. U just connect the points according to their needs an itit SMD based components hence size will be very compact. You can search for LM4871 mono amplifier module at amazon. Which can be run from 3-5V DC.

  47. Yes the schematic is totally wrong in regards to placement of IN4148 diodes R4 is to be placed between C6+ and R7 in order to function correctly otherwise they will short out . I have built this radio and it works very well if R4 placed as i have said .

  48. Shadow.
    Look, Two 1N4148 is acting as a cheap zener diode of 1.4 (2 x 0.7) volt, for low voltage functioning of detector module. However an resistance is required in series to limit the zener current which is shown as R11 (POT) in IC amplifier circuit. But in 3 volt operation, I am sure, as per you another 1K Ohm resistance should be inserted in series with zener, before R4. R4 is also required, else reception will not be traced.
